Fields of Fire is a very true-to-life account of the life and labors of Queensland cane-cutters in the 1930's. The story centers around Bluey (Tom Boyce), a young Englishman who emigrates to a wild corner of Australia and defies the odds against him to prove he is up to the challenge of cane-cutting. But he soon discovers that being accepted into the cutters tightly knit community is tougher than the dangerous work they face every day in the fields. A global war and violent local prejudices rock their community and one final massive disaster threatens not just their livelihood, but their very lives. Philip Quast plays Albie, one of the returning cane-cutters who has labored hard and long in the past and is doubtful of Bluey's ability to handle the job. He works in a gang of seven cane-cutters and appears several times throughout the miniseries. Unfortunately, Albie dies a very realistic and rather disturbing death when he is bitten by a poisonous snake.
