INTRODUCTION by Elaine H.
Set in a high security prison in Britain, it stars Janet McTeer as Helen who fights her way to the top of this male dominated 'world' to become the Governor of Barfield Prison. Struggling with the politics of the prison and her colleagues, personnel, and the difficult, mentally deranged and vicious inmates, she has few rewards in her secluded life.

But (from episode 4) into this life arrives from Australia a man she describes to her secretary as her boyfriend, lover and best friend. Simon - played by Philip Quast - drives up in a sleek black car looking absolutely smashing, and runs up the stairs, where Helen is waiting. They spend a few days together. Simon is a very playful character, teasing Helen, smacking her with a dish towel, and tending to her when she becomes ill. Because he is a successful lawyer he has agreed to look at the brief of a murdered inmate that she is involved with at the prison...
