INTRODUCTION (main source: IMDb)
The year 1987: Latif Yahia, an Iraqi Army lieutenant stationed on the Iranian border, bears an uncanny resemblance to his old classmate Uday Hussein, the notoriously brutal son of Saddam. Uday is the Black Prince of Iraq with unlimited power and wealth.
Latif is summoned to Saddam Hussein's inner sanctum in Baghdad and offered the devil's bargain: become Uday's body double or condemn his father and family to death. Latif Yahia plays that role for four years, surviving eleven assassination attempts aimed at Uday, before fleeing Iraq with the help of the CIA. Uday was eventually killed at age 39 during a gunfight in Mosul after the US invasion in 2003.

The Devil's Double is the fascinating story of Latif Yahia and his remarkable life as the double of Iraq's most reviled individual and provides a chilling vision of the House of Saddam through the eyes of a man who knew too much.

When I met Philip on the set I was blown away, I was standing in front of Saddam! Philip is truly an intelligent gentleman and a master of his craft, the best Saddam I have yet to meet - after the real one that is :)

Latif Yahia

Book The film is based on the life story of Latif Yahia and his bestselling novels The Devil's Double and I Was Saddam's Son. The books have been translated in 20 languages and sold over 1 million copies worldwide. As opposed to the books, the movie also  incorporates details of Latif Yahia's life after he fled Iraq. Latif managed to escape to Europe and refused to become an agent for the CIA.

info A gripping interview with Latif Yahia broadcast last year on the BBC programme HARDTalk, and which also includes a mention of the movie, is available on YouTube (in 3 parts).

I've become quite adept at taking a little money and making it look like a studio film. My hopes are always to do high-end dramatic films.

Lee Tamahori, director

You'd do this whole scene as one person, then you'd have to completely turn it on its head and be this very different person. It was exhausting and exhilarating.

Dominic Cooper

This will not be an action adventure, but rather a psychological thriller, a standoff between one of the most evil characters on earth and a protagonist who is obliged to investigate his own darker side.

Emjay Rechsteiner, head of Staccato
