THE STORY
While investigating the mysterious disappearance of a close friend, a police officer stumbles upon an undercover government organization devoted to investigating, understanding and ultimately eradicating the threat of vampires — a word never used to describe what might be an alternative evolutionary strain that's predatory and selfish but not supernaturally "evil"...

SYNOPSIS
CJD, AIDS, Global warming. For the first time in history, mankind has the ability to destroy itself. So now vampires need to take control of their food source. Against this enemy, religion is no defense but folklore has some truth. Not wooden stakes but carbon bullets. Not garlic but the chemical allicin. Not simply daylight but Ultraviolet light, so goes the introduction of this fine, superbly acted series that has aired in Great Britain and Australia.

Philip Quast plays a priest named Pearse J. Harman, the leader of an elite squad. This squad apparently receives government backing under the premise that the Code V's are a health threat and it's members answer to no one but Pearse. The main members are Doctor Angela Marsh played by Susannah Harker, a soldier named Vaughn Rice played by Idris Elba and a former police detective named Michael Colefield played by Jack Davenport. They hunt down and neutralize (it appears they cannot be killed) the modern day vampires known as Code V.

The entire cast is solid and brilliant in their low key approach to a genre that usually drips with blood and gore. None of the usual keys associated with vampires such as blood dripping fangs and blood shot eyes are here. This is a character driven series that holds your interest from beginning to end, and makes you care about each of the main characters as they make their journey through the new and uncharted territory of the undead. The Code V's recruit new members to their ranks by offering them immortality. Pearse, stricken with cancer is offered a chance to "cross over" and be spared an almost certain death by the disease that plagues him. The story line of Pearse and Angela dealing with his illness is both moving and powerful and adds a very human element to the surreal theme of the show. The only flaw is that it was much too short, leaving the viewer with many unanswered questions, one only hopes that a second series will be made to answer some of these burning issues and give us another glimpse into the fascinating world inhabited by Pearse and his friends.

Detailed Episode Guide (World Production website)

Ultraviolet came about when I was trying to come up with an idea for a TV series which wasn't cops or docs or lawyers. I wanted to see something different, a subject that doesen't usually get tackled on British TV drama.

...One of the best, most unsung miniseries you will ever see.

In its powerfully dramatic yet understated British way, Ultraviolet makes The X-Files look like Blue's Clues.
