PRESS RELEASE (Source: Publicity leaflet)
Since 1999, The Night of 1000 Voices has delighted full capacity audiences at the Royal Albert Hall. On Sunday May 4, 2003, once again thrill to the sight and sound of the huge 'Sing Live' massed choir from around the British Isles, children from the Sylvia Young Theatre School and The City of London Philharmonic (Hey, Mr Producer! and Sondheim Tonight) who will as before, accompany some very special stars from London, New York and Europe in a musical night to remember.

This year The Night of 1000 Voices will exclusively celebrate the multi-award-winning productions of Trevor Nunn including Les Misérables, Aspects of Love, Cats, Chess, My Fair Lady, Porgy and Bess, Sunset Boulevard, Anything Goes, Starlight Express, South Pacific, The Baker’s Wife, Nicholas Nickleby and Oklahoma!

Stars of London's West End, New York's Broadway and from the world of musical theatre will be performing songs from some of Trevor Nunn's best-known shows, including the multi-Olivier Award-winning Philip Quast singing 'Stars' from Les Misérables; the original Broadway star of Trevor Nunn's production of Chess, Judy Kuhn, singing the song she premiered, 'Someone Else's Story'. Lauren Kennedy will sing 'I'm Just a Girl Who Cain't Say No'. Kelli James who stopped the world tour of The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, will sing 'Memory'. The star of Broadway's Sunset Boulevard, Alan Campbell, will sing the title song from that show. Sally Ann Triplett and her Angels from the Royal National Theatre production of Anything Goes will reprise 'Blow, Gabriel, Blow' accompanied by the 1000 Voices chorus. David Michael Johnson will return for his fourth concert and the star of Show Boat, Kenneth Nichols, will sing Porgy to Broadway’s Laurie Williamson's Bess; and the Evening Standard’s Best Actor of 2001, Alex Jennings, will sing 'I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face'. Aled Jones will sing with Teri Bibb; Leigh Constantine, Tiffany Graves, Alexis Owen Hobbs, Alexandra Jay, Annette McLaughlin and Rebecca Thornhill will present their version of 'Macavity'. Tommy Korberg, who is currently starring in Chess in Sweden, will specially fly to London to take part in this extraordinary tribute concert.

In 2003, The Night of 1000 Voices will again support The Alan Jay Lerner Fund for Cancer Research at The Royal Marsden Hospital and this year's main beneficiary will be the Variety Club Children's Charity. Variety Club has spent over 50 years helping sick, disabled and disadvantaged children throughout the UK have a better life. Variety’s mission is to bring sunshine into the lives of children who are in need.

'Love Changes Everything', 'Bali Hai', 'One Day More', 'Do You Hear the People Sing?', 'Summertime', 'It Ain't Necessarily So', 'Oh! What a Beautiful Morning' and 'Oklahoma!' are just some of the songs that will be given the Night of 1000 Voices treatment, together with a sprinkling of songs from Trevor Nunn’s past productions which may not be so well known.

The West End’s distinguished maestro, David Firman, will once again conduct the massed musical forces and director Hugh Wooldridge (The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Ira Gerschwin Centenary Concert – Who Could Ask for Anything More?, The Noël Coward Centenary Celebration and Sondheim Tonight) says “This evening is a must for all who love musicals. Publicity Flyer

The main beneficiaries of the 2003 Night of 1000 Voices were the Variety Club Children's Charity and The Alan Jay Lerner Fund for Cancer Research at The Royal Marsden Hospital.

Having become a distinguished classical actor in his own country, Australia, Philip has worked in the UK in all forms of theatre from the RSC to the National, from Theatre in Education to the West End, television, film and musicals.

Philip now lives in England because of Trevor Nunn. Trevor auditioned him replete with crutches and a leg in plaster (Philip) for Les Misérables in Australia in 1987. He recalls Trevor taking his own jacket off and draping it over his shoulders to see what he would look like in the now famous Javert coat. “I guess that was the beginning of it all… wearing Trevor Nunn’s clothes meant I had to move to England to work with him again”.

Three English children later, Philip got the opportunity last year in South Pacific for which he won his third Olivier Award. Philip says “I know Trevor gets embarrassed when he is praised, extolled and lauded but for an actor there is no greater pleasure than his rehearsal room. It is safe and caring and loving and allows you to sing and praise, extol and laud in a way that has repercussions in everything you do and for each and every audience member who is lucky enough to see his work”.
