We have been working for so many years on Les Misérables since the French concept album and its first stage incarnation in Paris in 1980 (...) We crossed the Channel in 1983 after meeting Cameron Mackintosh who took us through all the different stages of finalising our work, bringing us together with Trevor Nunn, John Caird and Herbert Kretzmer. We started to dream of being received well at the Barbican; then of a one or two year honourable run at the Palace Theatre and then - why not! - of a nice opening night on Broadway. Reality has gone far beyond any of these dreams. The show has conquered the world and broken every historic record.
And here we are tonight, 10 years after the London opening, for an evening of celebration among 250 artists from so many companies, of Les Misérables around the world, all these musicians, all gathering to join us in blowing out the candles of a Tenth anniversary cake - 10 years in London.

From time to time, along comes a musical that makes history”, I wrote in Newsweek almost exactly 10 years ago - and it has, in more ways than I expected. Les Misérables not only continues to be a durable hit in North America, Europe and all over the musically sophisticated world, from Iceland to Japan, but is now reaching places where musicals aren't usually seen. (...) The show has had a unique emotional impact, far beyond the usual confines of the theatre. The universal 'message' implicit in Les Misérables has galvanised audiences during the momentous moments of the last 10 years... 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables' is now a hymn commemorating people who have died from an AIDS defining illness...
But perhaps nothing illustrates the singular universal quality of Les Misérables more than the October 8th 1995 Royal Albert Hall Concert. There is a special significance in the huge, one-night-only assembly of so many Les Misérables veterans who have become stars in their own right - proof that this epochal oeuvre has had a special impact not only on audiences throughout the world, but also on its equally international cast.
