Philip Quast: The Man of a Thousand Talents

Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, leading-man good looks and a natural acting ability honed to perfection by years of hard work, Philip Quast may not be a household name per se but if you are a stage buff you have surely heard about or seen his powerful and incredibly magnetic performance as Javert in the award-winning musical Les Misérables that forever changed the public perception of that famous literary figure.

Quast's work in the musicals Sunday in the Park with George, The Fix and South Pacific earned him the prestigious Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical on each occasion. His work - both in his native Australia and in the United Kingdom - in Shakespearean plays such as Coriolanus, Troilus and Cressida, Macbeth and Merchant of Venice as well as his roles in the Chekhov plays The Seagull - and most recently The Cherry Orchard - have also been highly praised.

If you haven't had the sublime pleasure of experiencing any of the above theatre roles you may remember Philip Quast from his film and television work where he added his special touch to such characters as the policeman (and womaniser) Carl Roberts in The Caterpillar Wish, the civic-minded teacher Ian McGregor in Brides of Christ, or The Damnation of Harvey McHugh where he oozed evil as the sexy politician Michael Muldoon.

Or perhaps you were mesmerized by him in Ultraviolet, where he starred as the mysterious and stoic Father Pearse J. Harman, or enjoyed one of his many other personas on shows like Midsomer Murders, Inspector Morse or The Governor. Finally, if you live in Australia you may have had the joy to watch him, as a child or young parent, in the highly acclaimed children's show Play School for which he still has a strong affinity.

If you, like us, were intrigued by this great talent then these pages may give you a more in-depth look and better insight into the man who brought these and other figures so vividly and memorably to life.
