EXCERPTS from the INTRODUCTION by Jason Carr (from the CD booklet)

The song cycle Learned Ladies was conceived for Steven Pimlott's production of Molière's The Learned Ladies (Les Femmes Savantes) at the RSC - the original idea being that there would be one song before each of the five acts which would act as an irreverent modern-day commentary on themes of the (period-costumed production of) the play - in particular, pomposity in academic circles and the place of women in a patriarchal society. Sadly, the American tenor of the original production, Blair Wilson, is no longer with us. Happily, though, Philip Quast (a member of the RSC ensemble that very season) has taken up the gauntlet...!

The 1996 RSC production of The Learned Ladies featured also two other notable 'Old Friends', namely Roger Allam and Niamh Cusack.
