LOCAL CROP STRIVES FOR ELUSIVE BOX-OFFICE GOLD
After so many have wandered among the mullock heaps, filmmakers hope they're on to a find at last, Garry Maddox writes.

 

Heard of The Caterpillar Wish? What about Death Defying Acts, The Book of Revelation or Voodoo Lagoon? The names won't mean much just yet but they are all Australian films heading for cinemas this year - the latest hopes for an industry that went from life support to the recovery ward last year.

It has been hard going. From a record low of 1.3 per cent the previous year, the country's share of cinema ticket sales increased to 2.8 per cent - a figure dwarfed by the 81 per cent for American films without even counting such British collaborations as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
