It was political dirt all round as Mary Poppins producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh joined MP Tim Holding on stage, writes Raymond Gill.
Another week, another Mary Poppins the Musical press conference. While producers of the $16 million show opening at Her Majesty's Theatre on July 29 are waiting for next week's press conference to reveal the show's star Verity Hunt-Ballard in her Mary costume, it was the turn of Minister for Tourism Tim Holding to take centre stage yesterday.
The official reason for him standing on a stage in a chorus line of 16 Cockney chimney sweeps was to welcome the show's co-producer, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, to Melbourne.
Both men have played a major role part in bringing the show to town.
Mackintosh who arrived here from his London base at the weekend said it was 17 years since he had finally persuaded P.L Travers - the late Australian-born author of the Mary Poppins children's stories - to allow him to adapt it for the stage.
