Jon English's musical Paris is based on the ancient Greek myth of the Trojan Wars. It's an epic tale, but the path that the musician-actor-writer has taken to get his show into a Melbourne theatre is an odyssey in itself. After 22 years's gestation, Paris opens at St Kilda's National Theatre on Thursday.
English says the Paris audience can expect a rock opera in the style of Jesus Christ Superstar. He promises battle scenes, crowd scenes, a shipwreck, and an appearance of the famous wooden Trojan horse. "It's a great love story with great characters . . . it's one of these great Greek tragedies about the human spirit."
