Few theater organizations get to spend their fourth birthday partying at the opening night of their first Broadway transfer. But for Menier Chocolate Factory artistic director David Babani, that's the icing on an impressive cake.
One of London's most distinctive off-West End venues is on a roll. Its Broadway bow is a transfer of Sunday in the Park With George, which originated at the Chocolate Factory and moved to the West End, winning five Olivier Awards in 2007. Sunday in the Park officially opens Feb. 21 at Studio 54 on the Rialto.
But that's just the start: At this year's March 9 Olivier ceremony, the Chocolate Factory will be in contention for five more awards. Three are for its now closed transfer of Little Shop of Horrors, the other two for its revival of Dealer's Choice, now at Trafalgar Studios.
If that weren't enough, the Chocolate Factory's current incumbent, La Cage aux Folles, has sold out its run and is in advanced negotiations for a West End transfer in April.
