Jeremy Sams' long-overdue Australian debut places him, rarely, in front of the audience, far from the director's chair that is his usual domain.
The prodigiously talented Sams presented a potted life-story with extracts from his original musicals, including the first (Ring Around The Moon) and the latest (last year's Christmas panto Frankenstein and the Sharks of Doom), his own opera translations for everything from Mozart to Kurt Weill and back again, hit musicals old and new, folk ditties like Shenandoah and a rarity from Michel Legrand.
Philip Quast, in superb voice, was the special guest, joining an excellent quartet, including Kaye Tuckerman and Simon Burke (whose duet with Quast, the glorious 'Lily's Eyes' from The Secret Garden, brought the house down).
One night only, more's the pity, but catch Sams' Singing Sondheim masterclass on June 16.
