WORKSHOP WITH PHILIP QUAST
by Matt Byrne

In short: Into the words we have to go.

One of the potential problems of masterclasses is it sometimes takes too long for the students to get close to the master - and vice versa.

Last year Mandy Patinkin had loads of star power, but took a while to get into the heart and mind of his subjects - no such problems with Philip Quast. Right from the start, after the artist had sung a number, Quast was on the case. He cut straight to the chase and took the song apart and revealed the anatomy of a number and a performance. Quast relaxed the singers and made them see their songs and themselves in a new light.

He explained how great lyrics required great examination, concentration and presentation, and took singers out of their comfort zones. Quast showed how the entrance was vital at an audition and could set up a successful appointment. This wasn't just a workshop for singers but a guide for those who direct them as well.
