FRENCH GAY FARCE IS JUST A BIT OF A DRAG

Given the Menier’s history of turning fringe hits into West End box office, they must be rubbing their hands at the return of the much loved musical from Hello Dolly composer Jerry Herman.

Whether it hits the spot is another matter: the Menier is brilliantly transformed into the titular drag nightclub, but it’s a messy affair.

The story of French club owner George’s son’s conservative future in-laws is a classic. And the club’s drag dancers stole the show more than is usually fair – as did Jason Pennycooke as Albin’s haughty "maid".

But Douglas Hodge as Albin had little to riff with, as Philip Quast’s Georges wasted the first at with a turn flatter than the chests of the chorus- making this a rather wobbly kind of fabulous.
