Caterpillar Wish is the latest in a recent string of Australian female coming-of-age films: Cate Shortland's Somersault (2004), Peaches (2005), even New Zealand features In My Father's Den (2005) and Rain (2001). When the rest of the world is busy churning out father-son-and-daughter movies (from RV and In Good Company to The Colour Of Paradise and The Return), Australia seems to be content to lean towards the feminine version of the family reconcilation story.
This repetition is sure to raise the ire of critics and detractors, perhaps signalling a trend of local funding bodies to fund similarly-themed stories in the hope that lightning will strike twice at the box office, especially after the success of Somersault.
