THE CHERRY ORCHARD

I saw the The Cherry Orchard just before Christmas and it was the best Chekov production I have seen anywhere! Howard Davies has approached Chekov in a different way to so many directors that the sense of life and even zest becomes riveting. Philip was "brilliant" to quote one of the critics - he was quite compelling and being such a big man (in the best possible sense) dominated the play but also so readily fitted the character. In fact the whole cast was excellent - Pamela Rabe and Lucy Bell in particular - but it is really difficult to single out any one. Wharf 1 is such an intimate theatre that it added to the enjoyment - you feel so involved in the action. The set was expansive - it was very clever.
