Brenda Blethyn is a fine actress, but sometimes she goes a bit over the top. She was like that in Little Voice, in which she practically swallowed her co-stars whole. In Introducing the Dwights, she's again in carnivorous mode.
Blethyn (Pride & Prejudice) is Jean, a British stand-up comedian living in Australia. Her career peaked years ago, and she's hungry to get back in the spotlight.
Of course, her act - which seems very old-school, like Phyllis Diller or a less-dirty Rusty Warren - is terribly passe. When she performs for a group of young show-biz types, they talk on their cellphones while she does her gags.
Jean has two sons. Elder Tim (Khan Chittenden) falls in love, which threatens Jean's sense of security. Mark (Richard Wilson) is mentally disabled, although he's able to drop a witty punch line whenever the movie needs one.
