Review by Pei Yin Lin:
I was pleased this film is entitled Clubland, instead of Introducing the Dwights, when it premiered in the UK. Clubland is a better-matched title as it goes well with the story of the lead character Jean (Brenda Blethyn), an ageing comedienne striving hard to keep her family on track and reclaim her past glory.
Struggling with her hectic routine of life (morning shift at a canteen, music tutor for the neighbourhood kids, and rehearsals for her own evening show), Jean also has to squeeze time to be a mother for her two teenage boys - Mark who suffers from a mental disability, and Tim who is introverted but a helpful chauffer and a joke-tester for her.
Review by Paul Robison:
Can we have her back now please? Brenda Blethyn dominates the film as her character Jean Dwight dominates her sons. Look, mate, it's a darn good film but she's a 'national treasure' and we want her back. Please put her on the next ship. And we don't mind if the lovely Emma Booth comes with her (watch out Kylie, there's another perfect bottom: 'look at that Angel's bum. Where do you get a bum like that? Long ago and far away').
