"A comic never knows when to draw the line," stand-up comedian Jean Dwight tells her son at one point in the film Introducing the Dwights. "I just need someone to tell me when I've gone too far."
If Jean never gets her comedy career off the ground, she may have a second life as a movie critic. Because that line nails exactly what's so off-putting about Cherie Nowlan's film - a "dramedy" that amps up both its comedy and drama well past the point of believability.
Brenda Blethyn is Jean, the boozy matriarch of the Dwights who was once a promising comedienne in the 1970s before she got married and raised two boys: the shy Tim (Khan Chittenden) and the mentally challenged Mark (Richard Wilson).
