HEARTFELT ROLE DESERVES HAND
by Tracey Pisk

Jean Dwight (Brenda Blethyn) is a small-time English comedian who shops her routine around Sydney's clubs and RSLs and makes ends meet by working in a cafeteria and teaching shiny-faced children how to sing and dance.

With two sons at home and no husband, Jean's life isn't easy but she's happy.

She loves nothing more than sharing a wine and a laugh with her best friend Lana, played by Rebecca Gibney, who is fantastic as a tattooed scrubber.

While Clubland is in many ways a coming-of-age film, it's also an exploration of the ever-shifting dynamics of a mother-son relationship.

In this case, Jean is forced to come to terms with 21-year-old Tim's (Khan Chittenden) blossoming sexual relationship with his newly acquired girlfriend, Jill (Emma Booth).
