A family crisis brews when a domineering woman's virginal 20-year-old son falls in love.

 

If you find a movie with a more annoying central performance than the one given by Brenda Blethyn in Cherie Nowlan's Introducing the Dwights, keep it to yourself. Duty calls, so I don't have that option.

Blethyn, a normally restrained actress temporarily turned free-range ham, plays Jean, a one-time British showbiz hopeful now working in the kitchen of an Australian fry joint while keeping her dream of stardom alive with a raunchy standup act at a comedy club.

Besides making people laugh, which she rarely does, Jean's major preoccupation is keeping her sons - virginal 20-year-old Tim (Khan Chittendon) and mentally handicapped Mark (Richard Wilson) - from wandering far from the nest.
