Brenda Blethyn's Jean Dwight is a boisterous, brassy, "bigger than" figure in a private world built on self-delusion, which she holds together by sheer force of overpowering personality. She's a canteen cook by day but a comedian by choice, doing her raunchy act in front of a casino ballroom crowd of retirees every weekend, and her adult son, Tim (the likable Khan Chittenden), is her driver, gofer and No. 1 fan by default.
That lovable streak blowing through the opening scenes of Introducing the Dwights of the exuberant single mom doting on her disabled younger son, Mark (Richard Wilson), and pinballing through the family home in a fluster of last-minute activity while Tim attempts to keep pace, soon gives way to a less flattering portrait.
