IN A WORD: WOW!

Andrew Lloyd Webber was very clear about Elena Roger, the Argentinian actress playing Evita on the West End stage.

The composer and I were chatting after we'd watched the thrilling early previews of Michael Grandage's new production of the Tim Rice-Lloyd Webber classic at the Adelphi Theatre.

"Well, the only real thing one can say about her is that she's got star quality," he told me matter-of-factly.

He thought some more and then explained how Grandage had seen Ms Roger early in the casting process, but had felt he wanted to see all the leading American and English contenders.
