Hal Prince's 1978 production of arguably Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's greatest musical was such a stark and uncompromising landmark production that it was difficult to imagine how any subsequent revivals could better it; while the 1996 film beautifully opened the story out and featured a mesmerising Madonna in the title role.
It's therefore a huge credit to Michael Grandage that he's managed to successfully re-imagine this sung-through classic so that it remains an unforgettable and moving piece of theatre that makes you totally forget the past and fall in love with the piece all over again.
