I saw Evita on Thursday night and the cast had a standing ovation, not all the theatre stood but it was very well received.
Eli, your report was so like my own that I will not repeat it. I also felt that PQ would not have enough meat in this production but was delighted to see how much he got out of it.
I had not seen the original show so no comparison and like Eli had only recently seen the film on DVD and was not impressed.
So I went with an open mind and my test of how much I enjoyed the evening stood the test. I didn't touch my earrings once all night! My other half always ask me this question as he knows from experience I start to twist my earings when something is not going right on stage.
There are some lovely little touches which so many Directors miss - I won't say too much so as not to spoil it for those who have yet to see the show. PQ's first entry is very interesting, the light started to click just before !! Keep this in mind when you go. The whole company were very good, a real ensemble who worked together so well. No real weak spots and bodes well for the alternates when they are on. Spot the PQ one in the first act!!
I loved the flow of the whole show, no interuptions other than the interval which all adds to the charm of the show. I had a wonderful seat which couldn't have been better, I will be back to see it again and if there are any changes. It is a bit short, and I think the rise of Peron, then his fall and than the rise again is integral to the story and it is a pity this has been missed, but it is still a very good show - at least I think so.
A few niggles - the orchestra was not at its best at the strat on Thursday, and I would have have like to see less of the atmospheric lighting all the time, but lighting is one of my areas so do tend to nit pick!!
A final point on the way out, a group of Americans were behind me, were talking ecitedly about the show and how they had enjoyed it, this ioncluded discussions on whether Peron was PQ - they asked the door steward if it was, she didn't know, so I turned and said yes, and they were delighted they had finally seen him having seen the DVD of 10AC. It made their night! There were about 10 of them but not one programme between them!
