With Cameron Mackintosh's name above the title and Sam Mendes as the director, there were high hopes for The Fix, a new musical by two unknowns from the United States. After two-and-a-half hours of shrill satire, duff lyrics and dodgy rock music, however, all hope has curdled into glum irritation. If this is the future of the musical, take me back to the bad old days of Half a Sixpence and The Sound of Music.
