A handsomely mounted stage version of Mary Poppins has swept into Melbourne with spoonfuls of vigour, high-flying magic and hummable tunes.
Based on the books by the Australian-born Pamela Travers and the 1964 Walt Disney film, the big-budget musical is brilliantly served by a strong, versatile and seasoned cast, notably Philip Quast and Marina Prior as Mr and Mrs Banks, Judi Connelli as the devilish Miss Andrew and Debra Byrne as the Bird Woman.
In a show coming to the Capitol Theatre in Sydney next April, there is also outstanding support from Sally Anne Upton, whose comic timing and panache bring the indefatigable yet challenged housekeeper Mrs Brill vibrantly alive.
The eyes and ears of the opening night audience were on Verity Hunt-Ballard in the title role and she did not disappoint. As one of her amusingly self-regarding songs testifies, she is Practically Perfect as the strong-willed and enigmatic dispenser of truths, discipline, unity and joy. She has indisputable star power, such is her bright, secure voice and the economy, poise and ease of her acting.
