THIS SOARING NEW POPPINS SETS THE STAGE ABLAZE
****1/2

There's only one word to describe the Cameron Mackintosh-Disney stage musical production of Mary Poppins. You know the one: Supercalifragilisticespialidocious.

With its winning mix of colourful spectacle, toe-tapping tunes, heart-warming story and first-rate production values, it takes elements from both P.L. Travers' books and the Disney film to create a joyous show that sends you home feeling as high as the kite that young Michael Banks longs to fly.

Directed by Richard Eyre on a wonderfully clever set by designer Bob Crowley, there are magical moments galore – from Bert's tap-dance around the proscenium arch, to Mary's umbrella flight across the audience.

Co-composers George Stiles and Anthony Drewe have skillfully combined the Sherman Brothers' classic songs from the film with seven of their own, the best of which is the infectiously hummable 'Practically Perfect'.

The casting could hardly be better. Verity Hunt-Ballard is a real discovery in the title role. In fact, just like the nanny she plays who arrives on the wind to help heal the unhappy Banks family, she is practically perfect.

Sure, the show is a bit schmaltzy at the end, but it's wonderful, uplifting entertainment. It's expected in Sydney late next year.
