The opening night of Mary Poppins was indeed, as the nanny describes herself, practically perfect. It's the musical theatre event of the year: a slick and colourful show that brings together the technical wizardry and visual style of Disney with some of our best entertainers.

The long search for an actor worthy of the lead role has paid off. Verity Hunt-Ballard is a wonderful Mary Poppins. Prim and imperious one moment, endearingly mischievous the next, she blends a rather precisely measured spoonful of sugar into the medicine she dishes out. A brilliant voice, sharp and clear as a bell, rounds out a pitch-perfect performance.
