It's so hard to pick favourite moments from the TAC because it's all wonderful - from the dramatic Overture to the final moments with the hugs, the balloons, fireworks and, the endless applause. What an atmosphere! Nevertheless for me some moments are more memorable than others.
I love the first 'Confrontation'. The extract quoted by Carol is so expertly contained in Javert's wonderful expression of smugness and triumph. I have seen Les Misérables three times besides the TAC and no one else has summed up Javert's attitude in one expression so perfectly as Philip Quast. He was almost born to play the part of Javert.
'Stars' is my favourite song in Les Mis because of the way PQ puts so much feeling and emotion into it - especially in the line 'Stars in your multitudes….' Others sing the song, PQ lives it! His version sets him apart from the rest!
Another favourite is the 'Suicide scene'. Javert's anguish and despair at having his entire world and everything he believed in, uprooted , is there brilliantly expressed in PQ's face.
One scene which can still bring a tear (or more) to my eye is at the barricade after the students have been killed and the Orchestra slowly plays 'Bring Him Home' starting with a lone Clarinet. I find that so moving! Similarly, the ending where the cast quietly start to sing 'Do You Hear the People Sing' and slowly get louder. The words are wonderful and sung with such emotion!
I also love watching the rapport which existed between Colm Wilkinson, PQ and Michael Ball eg Colm's encouraging pat on PQ's knee before 'Stars', Michael's pat on his arm when he'd finished and the friendly glances between PQ and Michael Ball as they applauded Colm Wilkinson when he took his bow. PQ's acknowledgement to the Orchestra and Chorus was such a lovely gesture. As a regular chorus member in amateur shows, it's so nice to get recognition!
The final 'One Day More' with all the Valjeans was just amazing! It reflected the emotionally charged atmosphere that existed throughout the whole show!
