How far can you change a well-known book and its meanings when you transpose it from page to stage? The trick is to get a balance between narrative and theme, what it might have meant when it was first published and what it could mean to us now.
When Adrian Noble commissioned and directed a stage version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a few years ago he never succeeded in escaping the storyline. The whole thing felt like a BBC Sunday teatime serial, quite enjoyable but plodding and worthy.
