"Out of the deserts of darkness and dreams,
Out through the oceans of sadness we sailed,
Venturing onward through mystical scenes,
Blown on the whim of the wind that prevailed"
So began Mike Batt in 1983, in his presentation of the wonderfully allegorical tale by Lewis Carroll about a mythical beast that sets the stage for a story woven into a musical tale of fantasy. The Crew onboard a ship sail in a seemingly endless search for the elusive prey, The Snark.
Opening at the Prince Edward Theatre in London on 24 October 1991, it featured Philip Quast, who had also sung the concert version in Australia in 1990, in another one of his outstanding performances in the role of the Bellman. His beautiful singing voice and stallwart, commanding presence, captured the magic and beauty of the music. Unique staging and a delightful score made this show a most unforgettable production.
