(From Sue's post on the PQG Message Board):
...Needless to say you are in for a real treat if you are going to see it. Bryn is brilliantly terrifying - and I am glad that I was not a male member of the audience!!! An amazing stage presence and phenomenal performance.
Maria was delightfully hysterical and even her costumes added to the humour. Absolutely fantastic performance and she was given a well-deserved standing ovation by many.
Loved the young lovers. Strong singing and acting from both - and very tender lovemaking.
Philip was at his best. I worried that I wouldn't be able to distinguish between him and Bryn in their duets but no problem at all. Philip has something very distinctive in his voice. He played the part superbly, of course! Subtle acting. Not as lecherous as I was expecting. He managed to make me feel sorry for him - again!
Disappointing that he didn't sing the lusting after Johanna song. Despite that, he managed to make the Judge a very major player in the game. Just wished he'd had a bit more to sing!
I was delighted to see Steve Elias as The Beadle - I remember him from the Chichester Festival days - and I recognise his leather coat!!!!
Daniel Evans was excellent as Tobias. I sympathised with his fear and he sang Not While I'm Around very well.
Overall I was constantly swinging between trembling from laughter and trembling with fear - with all credit to Sondheim - and to the fantastic cast in this very special production. I do hope lots of you will get to see it.
The orchestra were amazing and every member of the ensemble and chorus are to be congratulated too.
Minor whinges: maybe I had a bad seat but parts of it were hard to hear - especially when right over the other side of the stage and not facing me.
And why do they write in tiny letters in red on black in the programme?!!!! Or am I blind and deaf in my advancing years?
